About our charity

The charity manages a building in Brecon which was left in trust by Edmund Jones in 1674. The profits from the rental of this property are used to make annual grants to students, university undergraduates, apprentices and vocational trainees.

Edmund Jones was MP for Brecon in the 1650’s, a time of great political upheaval and intense power struggles. By aligning his views to the dominant political trends of the moment, he prospered during Oliver Cromwell’s interregnum, and remained in a position of authority up to the restoration of the English monarchy. He was appointed ‘Recorder for Brecon’ and ‘Attorney General for South Wales’, and it seemed he used his positions of standing for good purposes. ‘In 1674 he assigned a house, stable, yard and outhouse in the High Street in trust for apprenticing poor boys, natives of the borough, within the same.’ (Samuel Lewis, A Topographical Dictionary of Wales, 1849) His legacy to assist the young people of Brecon lives on today through the Edmund Jones Charity.

Grants are available for young people under 25 who can prove they are resident at an address within Brecon town; they do not have to be studying in Brecon.

“I very much appreciate this grant which will enable me to buy the books to accompany my studies. I am loving my course so far and look forward to lots of reading.”
